The patient was diagnosed with Parkinsonism in Pakistan many years ago and despite extensive treatment, his condition had been deteriorating with severe disability in walking and stiffness even on high doses of medication. Apollo Hospitals Chennai completes 10,000 Coronary Angioplasties !

Apollo Hospitals Chennai started performing Angioplasties in the year 1985 and has now completed 10,000 Coronary Angioplasties. In the initial years, only Balloon Angioplasties were performed. Over the years, we used metallic stents and medicated stents and we further advanced in the recent past to doing many refined procedures like Multi-Vessel Angioplasty, Left Main Angioplasty and Bifurcation Lesions. The Hospital also does Intraaortic Balloon Pump procedure for very sick cases, Rota Blator procedure for calcified lesions and Primary Angioplasty in acute heart attacks.

The first “Pediatric Critical Care” refresher course was conducted by Apollo Children’s Hospital for Nurses. Various hospitals across Chennai and Southern Indian States were invited for this refresher course for nurses. Resorbable screws used for the first time in India at Apollo Hospitals Chennai to correct congenital spine problem of a six-year-old child from Tanzania.

Six-year-old Maureen Richard Shirima will now be able to run and jump, like other students in her class in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Senior Consultant and Spine Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals Chennai, Dr. Sajan K. Hegde said that a bone graft was taken from the child and used to set the fractured bone and resorbable screws helped to keep the bones in place. He said resorbable screws were in use for sometime now across the world but this was the first time it was being used in India to correct such rare problems of the lower spine.

18 Children get cochlear implants in a day!

Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, achieved a record of sorts when it completed surgical procedures on 18 children in a single day by implanting cochlear devices to rid them of hearing impairment.

A decade of liver transplantation

Children and adults, who were donors and recipients of liver transplants at Apollo Hospitals during the past 10 years, joined hands to mark a decade of liver transplantation in India. Dr Anupam Sibal, group medical director of Apollo hospitals, said: "Since 1998 more than 200 liver transplants have been done. In the last two years, 128 liver transplants have been carried out with 90 percent success rate and 100 percent in paediatric cases." "This life saving therapy has given hope to thousand with cases of liver failure. Our transplant unit received patients not only from India but from fifteen othercountries including US and Canada," Dr Sibal added. Doctors and hospital staff beamed proudly, as they recollected the journey of each of the patients that had received "not an organ but a new lease of life" at the event held at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital Delhi.
