First refresher course for nurses in “Pediatric Critical Care” conducted by Apollo Children’s Hospital Chennai |

The first “Pediatric Critical Care” refresher course was conducted by Apollo Children’s Hospital for Nurses. Various hospitals across Chennai and Southern Indian States were invited for this refresher course for nurses. There was an overwhelming response and more than 100 delegates registered for the program.

An inspiring inaugural address was given by Dr. Sathya Bhama, Director Medical Services and Asst Nursing Director, Ms. Punitha Singh welcomed the delegates and gave a motivating address to the nursing fraternity. The course was declared open by Dr. Indira, Consultant PICU, Apollo Children’s Hospital. The refresher course was a grand success and the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Kamath.
The delegates were from different institutions like Sri Ramachandra Hospital, Neyveli Lignite Hospital, American International School, S M F Hospital , Surya Hospital, Metha Hospital, Venkateshwara College of Nursing , Apollo Hospitals of Bangalore, Mysore, Bhuvaneshwar and Madurai, Apollo Speciality Hospital, Apollo First Med, Apollo College of Nursing , Apollo School of Nursing ,Apollo Main Hospital, Apollo Children Hospital and Apollo Tondiarpet.

Dr. Suchitra, Dr.Indira, Dr.Deepika, Dr.Kamath, and Dr.Revathi Raj conducted various sessions on Recognizing a sick child, Common Pediatric Emergencies, Infection Control, Drug calculations, Basics in ventilation, Care of a Child on ventilator etc After each presentation, there was an interactive session which helped the delegates to get their doubts cleared.
Dr. Suchitra, PICU Consultant and Dr. Kamath had prepared a very informative booklet which was distributed to all the delegates.
During the post Lunch session, the delegates were divided into groups to attend skill stalls which was set with Biomedical Equipments and mannequin for demonstration and return demonstrations of various procedures done in PICU, like Hemodynamic monitoring, Oxygenation, ABG analysis, Nebulisation, Cardio pulmonary resuscitation, Case presentation, Ventilator functions and various modes in it.
Every stall was headed by a PICU Consultant, PICU nurse and an ER nurse. The group enjoyed learning the advanced technology and practice skills which would help them to render effective Nursing care of a child in Pediatric intensive care unit.
